Here I’m giving you guys my personal top 5 films that will be released in cinemas next month. Hopefully this will make it easier when you’ve gone old school and planned a date to the cinema but you have no idea what’s coming out. Or even when you’re in town during next month and you fancy watching a flick. This guide will help you decide what films you must see and what films you should probably give a pass to. These are just my personal opinion and I have no idea if these films are going to be any good or not. I’m just basing this on what films look good in the trailers and what makes me excited to go watch them. When I go watch the actual films I’ll be sure to give my review and I’ll see if my predictions we’re correct. But enough of the writing let’s get on with the must see movies of August 2014.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
This has to be the most highly anticipated film of the year let alone the month. Fans of Marval have been looking forward to this film ever since the first stills on set were being released. Not many Marval fans even knew these heroes existed, me included. The fact that Marval can release a film with relatively unknown heroes shows how much DC is losing out in the super hero movie wars. Especially when you see that DC can’t even get one Superman movie right.
But will this film actually be any good? The trailers look incredible as we see a mix of Star Wars meets Marval. Actor Chris Pratt who plays Peter Quill is a Han Solo type character who seems smug, witty and incredibly cool. You can already feel that you’ll like this character from only looking the trailers. The rest of the characters include Bradley Cooper playing as a talking Racoon, Vin Diesel playing as a tree and Zoe Saldana playing a sexy green bad ass. It looks outrageous but it also looks like a lot of fun. In summary after stealing a mysterious orb, American pilot/outlaw hero Peter Quill is hunted down and thrown into an inter-galactic prison. In order to secure his freedom, Quill reluctantly joins forces with alien bandits Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot to form an alliance of misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. You would be a fool to miss it and even early reports are calling this a blockbuster hit. The film is set to be released on July 31st
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The worlds most beloved turtles are back again but this time in CGI and explosions. Michael Bay is not one of my favourite directors; in fact I detest the Transformer films immensely. So okay this isn’t being directed by him but it sure does have his finger prints all over it. I don’t need to tell you much about this film as who doesn’t know the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?! It’s a simple concept yet it’s beloved by all under the age of 30. Any teenage boy or young adult is sure to have watched the turtles at some time in their life.
However this film is sure to fail but with a possible hilarious outcome. It’s worth seeing the film to see how over exaggerated action scenes are, it’s worth laughing at the terrible CGI but also it’s most important to see what total trash this film is bound to be. Though I could be embarrassingly wrong and this film might be quite decent. If the characters are likeable enough and the action scenes do look pretty awesome this film could be quite good. However im fairly confident this will just be another childhood cartoon ruined by Michael Bay. Saying that it is still worth a watch, if you’re into boobs and explosion this is going to be the film for you. Don’t expect it to be Avengers but it is Michael Bay, take in some Jgermeister and you might just enjoy it. The film is set to be released on August 8th. (In UK October 17th because of silly stuff)
3. Sin City: A dame to kill for
The first Sin City was a huge favourite of mine; tough, gritty, bloody and stylish. I’m hoping for the same in this sequel where we see some of our old favourites joined by some new ones. The film has a star studded cast with the likes of Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Josh Brolin and many others featuring in the Frank Miller tale. In short the town’s most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. You don’t need to explain much in a Frank Miller story but you know you’re going to expect blood, fights and scarcely clad women. Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez take this film on this time without the help of Quentin Tarantino. Should this make us less excited? Maybe, but you still know it’s going to have the same bloody vibe as the last film.
I’m hugely exited for the films’ release and from the trailers you can see how great the film looks. It’s going to be sexy and bloody and you just can’t afford to miss it. The film is set to be released on August 25th.
4.The November Man
Pierce Brosnan takes on the spy role again, but this time he’s not 007 but an ex-CIA member. It’s difficult to see if this is going to be anything different to the typical spy films we’re used to. It’s not exactly ex spy has his daughter taken but is more protect a witness from a very bad guy. Yes we’ve seen this done a thousand times before but maybe there is more to the film. The scenes and sets from the trailers look interesting, many scenes taking part in what seems Italy which reminds me of Casino Royal and other Bond films. This isn’t going to be as good as 007 but it seems like it might be decent enough. The trailer shows a snippet of the chases and fighting scenes which look fairly exciting. It’s not going to be a Skyfall but it’s worth going out and enjoying some exciting action. The film is set to be released on August 27th.
5. Into the Storm
Disaster films are not the most critically liked films, based on bad acing, bad CGI and unlikeable characters, but it’s hard to deny that seeing the destruction that nature brings is pretty cool. In this film we see a group of high school students document the events and aftermath of a devastating tornado. Pretty generic but the shots of destruction and the excitement of seeing a natural disaster can be pretty thrilling. Without seeing the film yet I can’t give an opinion on if it’s good or not obviously. I have no clue if the characters will be interesting or not, but in disaster films surely you’re more interested in the disaster itself. Richard Armitage stars in this film and gives off a pretty believable American accent. In any film featuring Richard Armitage you are sure to enjoy his scenes the most. It would be a good film to watch with your friends or even on a date. Don’t expect a master piece but do be prepared to see a lot of destruction. The film is set to be released on August 22nd.
One to miss: The Expendables 3
How this film has managed to get another sequel I do not know. Guns, explosions, old actors way past their best and a predictable plot. This film even has every action actor over 50 staring in it all the way from Sylvester Stallone to Harrison Ford. When a film concentrates more on the actors in the film rather than the actual characters or plot then you know you have a shitty block buster on your hands. Once you’ve seen the first one you’ve seen them all, don’t expect anything different. If you’re into elderly men speaking cringy lines, forcing themselves through terrible action scenes and a screen full of fire and explosions then this must be a must see. If you have more than 1 brain cell then save your money and spend it on something useful. If you actually want to see this film the release date is August 14th.
